Our Philosophy and Theory of Change
We are an accessory company creating beautiful, one of a kind bags, handcrafted by women who are winning their fight against addiction.
Our mission is to end relapse by providing pathways toward economic independence and sustained sobriety.
UNSHATTERED PROVIDES EMPLOYMENT AND JOB SKILLS TRAINING IN A COMMUNITY OF LIKE-MINDED WOMEN, EXPRESSING OUR VALUE AND PURPOSE THROUGH WORK, AND COMMITTED TO ONGOING PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
I had nobody to put as my emergency contact
The average age that the women on our team began using substances is 11 years old. One began as early as 5 at the hands of her father.
In nearly every case, our women say that the substances weren't the problem... they were the solution to the problem. They were a way to numb the tremendous pain and trauma they were experiencing. The majority of our women have experienced molestation and or sexual violence.
ADDICTION IS DIFFICULT TO OVERCOME BECAUSE IT MEANS FACING WHAT'S BEEN BURIED, AND TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR CHOICES TO AVOID IT.
I was born in prison.
Once someone completes a substance abuse recovery program, there is rarely a viable next step. Most individuals lack job skills, education, or most importantly a safe community to return home to.
Unshattered focuses on the “then what?” solution for people overcoming trauma by paving the road between recovery and long term sobriety.
In the population of opiate users, greater than 80+% relapse after going through recovery. in 2017, more than 72,000 Americans died of an overdose.
RELAPSE OFTEN LEADS TO AN OVERDOSE, WHICH IS OFTEN FATAL. HAVING A SAFE COMMUNITY CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH.
The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection - Johann Hari
Unshattered lets me be creative and gives me a place to belong
We believe that artistic work is healing, work is a calling and a purpose, and economic independence creates choices.
The journey of healing and recovery is long, but the combination of employment, education, and community based on a spiritual foundation leads to transformation, and ultimately gives our women the opportunity to find their purpose and live an addiction-free life.
WORK GIVES US PURPOSE. ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE CREATES CHOICES THAT EMPOWER AND ENABLE WOMEN TO CHOOSE SOBRIETY.
How can you say you love someone if you don't care about their economic well-being? - Becca Stevens, Founder Thistle Farms
